Selfies are important. I believe that they can be empowering for a lot of people, including myself. They can make us feel better about ourselves and get based on what we assume we may look like. We can take pictures and have them resonate with a specific time in our lives.
For me, selfies are important and necessary. The amount of selfies I take ties into how I feel about myself and my self-confidence. I have 3 selfies here that I took in 3 different stages in my life. High school: senior year, College: first year, and Adulthood: first stage. Now, I may have made any drastic changes in the last few years, but I can look at that picture from high school and see how much I’ve grown from that person. I’ve grown in every way, and I can see that through my selfies. I have hundreds of photos and videos of myself, and I’m proud of every one of them. Because there was a time when I didn’t do that, I barely took photos of myself. These pictures show me how much growth, but it also allows me to look back at the past when I want. Also, in every one of these photos, I was in a different stage in my life, experiencing different things. First, getting ready to leave home for the first time. Second, getting used to being away and being on my own. Third, stepping into my adulthood and taking on adult responsibilities. Looking back, I acknowledge that there were bad times in all 3 of these stages, but because of my incredible growth, it got easier and easier getting through every hardship.
So, to answer the question, do I think selfies are a form of empowerment or narcissism? I believe that it can be empowering. One action does not cause narcissism; it’s never just one thing. So yes, selfies are important, and I will continue to take more.
